Bakuchiol: The Korean Skincare Ingredient Perfect for Sensitive Skin

Bakuchiol has become one of the most talked-about skincare ingredients in recent years, because it acts like retinol but is much gentler on the skin. For people over 40, or anyone with sensitive skin, that combination makes it especially appealing.

I have always been a firm believer in retinol and had been using it for some years, when a few months ago I started to notice my skin becoming increasingly sensitive. It started to itch and burn and I knew it was time to ditch my Differin gel (a strong over-the-counter vitamin A derivative) and switch to something that would be just as effective but easier on my skin. Enter Bakuchiol.

Chemically, bakuchiol is not a retinoid and it’s unrelated to vitamin A, but it produces similar results with less irritation for most people.

Bakuchiol is usually used for anti-aging and skin renewal. Its main benefits are:

  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improves pigmentation
  • Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial
  • Antioxidant protection

It’s particularly good for those with sensitive skin, over 40, rosacea-prone or new to retinoids. It generally layers well with vitamin C, niacinamide, AHAs and peptide (more on those in another post!).

One thing to remember is that Bakuchiol is not a miracle fix for wrinkles; it won’t completely erase them (full disclosure: no topical will ever fully erase wrinkles), but it will soften them and improve the texture of your skin. I can personally attest to this.

If you’re looking to try Bakuchiol, I would recommend serums like Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum and Purito Seoul Bakuchiol Timeless Revitalising Serum.
